Alena Koroleva (b. 1985)
Graduated from the St. Petersburg State University of Cinema and Television as a filmmaker (MA). Main focus of her visual art practice is in documentary portraits. She has made few short films, which have been shown at various international and Russian film festivals. Since 2012 – member of selection committee and program curator at Message to Man IFF (Saint Petersburg, Russia) – the oldest International Film Festival in Russia, its focus is on documentary films. She is also a co-founder and co-curator of Kinodot International Experimental Film Festival, which is dedicated to artist’s moving images.
Apart from programming for international competitions and travelling echo-shows of these festivals, Alena curated 6 special programs at Message to Man: selection of music videos and video-art Sinesthesia (2014), moving bike-projection show with Brazilian collective VjSuave (2014), program of new Korean animation How to Eat Your Apple (2015), documentary films based on material defects and errors GlitchDoc (2016), contemporary independent Chinese docs Chinese Ghosts (2017), reflexive experimental docs Observing the Observer (2018).
Alena is a sound artist with a focus on field recording. Her ongoing project Invisible Cities researches urban soundscapes. She led a sound recording workshop in Geneva art school HEAD in 2018.
At Conversalon, Alena will present “Evidence of Evidence” – highlighting selections from past editions of Message to Man IFF, Kinodot EFF and artist’s work from Saint Petersburg. The program investigates personal and collective memory, as well as mediation and narrativization of historical and contemporary events.
